      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      The Student Assistance Scheme provides assistance for low income families who satisfy a means test towards the cost of levies for:

      • full-time students from kindergarten to year 12 at state and nongovernment schools
      • students enrolled part-time in special circumstances may be eligible if an application is supported by a statement from a student counselor.

      Catholic sector schools directly assess eligibility for assistance to families and queries for assistance need to be directed to the relevant school.

      Assistance is based on a family’s taxable income and the number of dependent children. Assistance is also available to grandparents raising grandchildren. Grandparents must provide proof that their grandchildren are legally in their care.

    • Spectacles assistance

      Assistance to buy spectacles may be available to low income families with:

      • students in exceptional or extenuating family circumstances.

    • Accommodation allowance for apprentices and trainees

      An accommodation allowance of $40 per training day (to a maximum of $200 per week) is available to:

      • apprentices and trainees who have to travel more than 40 kilometres each way to attend training with a training provider within Tasmania.

    • Accommodation allowance for students (year 11 and 12)

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Financial support may be given to year 11 and 12 students who live away from home due to the distance between their usual home in Tasmania and the closest institution offering their chosen course of study. The assistance is available to:

      • year 11 and 12 students whose nearest school is more than 40 kilometres from their usual home.

    • Adult student bus fares - metropolitan areas

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Adult concession fares of $2.20 (all sections single flat fare) apply at all times, not just for travel to and from school. A further 20 per cent discount is available on presentation of a Greencard (Metro) or Smartcard (Merseylink). These fares are available to:

      • full-time students from the year of their 19th birthday who are attending a recognised Tasmanian education institution.

    • Adult student bus fares - urban fringe and rural areas

      A 50 per cent concession on the adult base fare applies at all times, not just for travel to and from study, and is available to:

      • full-time students from the year of their 19th birthday who are attending a recognised Tasmanian education institute.

    • Adult student transport concession - special circumstance

      Adult students enrolled in full-time study at a recognised Tasmanian education institution and who, due to circumstances beyond their control, have yet to complete two equivalent years of post-grade 10 education or training, may be entitled to:

      • travel between their place of residence and their education institution on public transport at the child student fare
      • a Student Bus Pass for free travel.

      Note: An ‘Adult Student’ is any student 18 years of age or older before 1 January of the current calendar year.

    • Apprentice and trainee travel allowances for off-the-job training

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      A travel allowance of 41 cents per kilometre (45 cents for students living on the West Coast) may be payable to:

      • apprentices and trainees who have to travel more than 42 kilometres return to attend off-the-job training.

      Where apprentices and trainees are required to travel within Tasmania for training, an accommodation allowance of $40 per day (to a maximum of $200 per week) is available to:

      • apprentices and trainees who have to travel more than 40 kilometres each way to attend training with a registered training organisation within Tasmania.

      Where apprentices and trainees are required to travel from Flinders Island, King Island and Cape Barren Island, an accommodation allowance of $40 per day is available, including weekends, if attending for two or three weeks. The Tasmanian Government will:

      • provide $52 towards airport transfer and
      • pay the full cost of return airfares paid for travel to attend their Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in Tasmania.

      Where apprentices and trainees are required to travel to the mainland for training, the Tasmanian Government will (to a maximum amount of $5 000 per calendar year):

      • contribute to the cost of airfares 
      • provide $52 towards airport transfer and
      • pay an accommodation allowance of $72 a day.

    • Student bus fares - non-metropolitan areas

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Student fares of $1.60 (single trip) applies at all times, not just for travel to and from school. This concession applies to:

      • full-time students up to and including the year of their 18th birthday who are attending a recognised Tasmanian education institute.

      Students who are travelling on a service without an electronic ticketing system can purchase a 10 ride ticket at a discounted maximum cost of $12.80.

      Students who travel on a service with an electronic ticketing system can access a discounted fare of $1.28 with the relevant electronic card.

    • Conveyance allowance

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      An allowance to assist with the cost of transporting students to the nearest school or school bus service is available to students:

      • who live five kilometres or more from the nearest school or school bus stop (whichever is closer)
      • with special needs who are unable to access public transport 
      • living on Bass Strait islands and attending their closest educationally appropriate school or college on mainland Tasmania.

      A reduction on the normal tuition fee for each unit or module is available to enrolled students who:

      • are receiving a Centrelink allowance such as Newstart, Youth Allowance, Disability Support Pension, a Pension, Austudy or Abstudy
      • are listed on a current Centrelink Card as a dependent
      • hold a current DHS or DVA Pensioner Concession Card
      • hold a current DHS Health Care Card.

    • Courses without fees

      Courses for which there are no tuition fees include:

      • any of the Foundations Programs
      • courses specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
      • Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).

      Tuition fees are not charged for inmates at a custodial institution.

    • Courses with capped fees

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Course tuition fees for students are capped at the annual maximum amount of $300 for students eligible for a concession.

      Students who are 16-19 years and have had less than two years’ education after year 10, will pay levies of $300 for a full years’ program.

    • Fee waiver

      Fees can be waived in full or reduced to concession rate (capped at $300) or to an alternative amount for students in extreme financial hardship.

      Note: Students are referred to a Student Counsellor for assessment.

    • Student childcare subsidy

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Up to a 25 per cent reimbursement of childcare costs (to a maximum of $500 per student per year) is available to students:

      • enrolled in an accredited course at TasTAFE and
      • with childcare provided through a carer registered under the Family Day Care Scheme or a day care service or carer licensed by the Department of Education.

      Note: This concession is subject to available funds at the time of application.
