      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      The Student Assistance Scheme provides assistance for low income families who satisfy a means test towards the cost of levies for:

      • full-time students from kindergarten to year 12 at state and non-government schools
      • students enrolled part-time in special circumstances may be eligible if an application is supported by a statement from a student counsellor.

      Catholic sector schools directly assess eligibility for assistance to families and queries for assistance need to be directed to the relevant school.

      Assistance is based on a family’s taxable income and the number of dependent children. Assistance is also available to grandparents raising grandchildren. Grandparents must provide proof that their grandchildren are legally in their care.

    • Spectacles assistance

      Assistance to buy spectacles may be available to low income families with:

    • Accommodation allowance for apprentices and trainees

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Where apprentices and trainees are required to be away from their usual place of residence in order to attend their registered training organisation, an accommodation allowance of $50 per night (to a maximum of 300 per week) is available to:

      • apprentices and trainees who have to travel more than 61 kilometres each way to attend training with a training provider within Tasmania.

    • Accommodation allowance for students (year 11 and 12)

      Financial support may be given to year 11 and 12 students who live away from home due to the distance between their usual home in Tasmania and the closest institution offering their chosen course of study. The assistance is available to:

      • year 11 and 12 students whose nearest school is more than 40 kilometres from their usual home.

    • Adult student bus fares - urban areas

      Adult concession fares of $2.30 (single flat fare) apply at all times, not just for travel to and from school. A further 20 per cent discount is available on the presentation of a Greencard (Metro and Tassielink) or Smart Card (Merseylink). These fares are available to adult students who are:

      • aged 18 years or older at 1 January in the year of study and
      • a full-time student (600+ hours per year) enrolled at an education facility recognised by the Department of Education.

    • Adult student bus fares - urban fringe and rural areas

      A 50 per cent concession on the adult base fare applies at all times, not just for travel to and from an education facility, and is available to adult students who are:

      • aged 18 years or older at 1 January in the year of study and
      • a full-time student (600+ hours per year) enrolled at an education facility recognised by the Department of Education.

    • Adult student transport concession - special circumstance

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Adult students may be eligible for a special circumstance student bus pass which provides them with discounted travel on one or more fare charging bus services between 6.00 am and 7.00 pm on school days, if they meet the following criteria:

      • are aged 18 years or older at 1 January in the year of study
      • are a full-time student (600+ hours per year) enrolled at an education facility recognised by the Department of Education
      • studying at a level that is no higher than is offered to any year 11 or 12 student at a senior secondary college and
      • have not had the opportunity to complete the equivalent of two years post-year 10 study due to circumstances beyond their control.

      If the student holds a current Concession Card, they may be eligible to travel for free.

    • Student bus fares - urban areas

      Student fares of $1.70 (single trip) apply at all times, not just for travel to and from school. This concession applies to students who are:

      • under 18 years or turning 18 years in the year of study and
      • a full-time student (600+ hours per year)  enrolled at an education facility recognised by the Department of Education.

      Students travelling on a Metro service can travel at a discounted student fare of $1.36 (single trip) when using a Greencard.

      Students who travel on Merseylink urban services can access the discounted ($1.36) fare by using a Smart Card.

    • Apprentice and trainee travel allowances for off-the-job training

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      A travel allowance of 41 cents per kilometre (45 cents for students living on the West Coast) may be payable to:

      • apprentices and trainees who have to travel more than 42 kilometres return to attend off-the-job training.

      Where apprentices and trainees are required to travel within Tasmania for training, an accommodation allowance of $50 per night (to a maximum of $300 per week) is available to:

      • apprentices and trainees who have to travel more than 61 kilometres each way to attend training with a registered training organisation within Tasmania.

      Where apprentices and trainees are required to travel from Flinders Island, King Island and Cape Barren Island, an accommodation allowance of $50 per night is available, including weekends, if attending for two or three weeks. The Tasmanian Government will:

      • provide $52 towards airport transfer and
      • pay the full cost of return airfares paid for travel to attend their Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in Tasmania.

      Where apprentices and trainees are required to travel to the mainland for training, the Tasmanian Government will (to a maximum amount of $8 000 per calendar year):

      • contribute to the cost of airfares
      • provide $52 towards airport transfer and
      • pay an accommodation allowance of $90 per night.

    • Student bus fares - non-urban areas

      Student fares of $1.70 (single trip) apply at all times, not just for travel to and from school. This concession applies to students who are:

      • under 18, or turning 18 in the year of study; and
      • a full-time student (600+ hours per year)  enrolled at an education facility recognised by the Department of Education.

      Students who are travelling on a service without an electronic ticketing system can purchase a 10-ride ticket at a discounted maximum cost of $13.60.

      Students who travel on a service with an electronic ticketing system can access a discounted fare of $1.36 with a Greencard (Metro and Tassielink) or Smart Card (Merseylink).

    • Conveyance allowance

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      An allowance to assist with the cost of transporting students to the nearest school or school bus service is available to students:

      • who live outside an area with an urban bus service, and more than five kilometres from the nearest government home area or educationally appropriate school or bus stop
      • living on Bass Strait islands and attending their closest educationally appropriate school or college on mainland Tasmania.

    • Student free travel - urban, urban fringe and rural areas

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      A student bus pass for free travel provides free travel on one or more fare charging bus services between home and school.  Free travel applies between 6.00 am and 7.00 pm on school days for students who are:

      • under 18 years or turning 18 years in the year of study and
      • a full-time student (600+ hours per year) enrolled at an education facility recognised by the Department of Education.

      and who meet one or more of the following eligibility criteria:

      • has a current Concession Card or listed as a dependent on the card
      • is under a Care and Protection Order
      • is attending their Home Area school (rural areas only)
      • requires a Free Transfer pass as they travel on more than one fare charging bus service between home and school.

      A reduction on the normal tuition fee for each unit or module is available to enrolled students who:

      • are receiving a Centrelink allowance such as Newstart, Youth Allowance, Disability Support Pension, a Pension, Austudy or Abstudy
      • are listed on a current Centrelink Card as a dependent
      • hold a current DHS or DVA Pensioner Concession Card
      • hold a current DHS Health Care Card.

    • Courses without fees

      Courses for which there are no tuition fees include:

      • any of the Foundations Programs
      • courses specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
      • Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).

      Tuition fees are not charged for inmates at a custodial institution.

    • Courses with capped fees

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Course tuition fees for students are capped at the annual maximum amount of $310 for students eligible for a concession or $370 for non-entitled students eligible for a concession.

      Students who are 16-19 years and have had less than two years’ education after year 10, will pay levies of $310 for a full year's program.

    • Fee waiver

      Fees can be waived in full or reduced to concession rate or to an alternative amount for students in extreme financial hardship.

    • Student childcare subsidy

      Concession available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria

      Up to a 25 per cent reimbursement of childcare costs (to a maximum of $500 per student per year) is available to students:

      • enrolled in an accredited course at TasTAFE and
      • with childcare provided through a carer registered under the Family Day Care Scheme or a day care service or carer licensed by the Department of Education.

      Note: This concession is subject to available funds at the time of application.
